Week 7 Record: 1 – 5
Yikes! This was a rough one…
Anytime I lose almost every single one of my bets, it makes me wonder if I really even know ball. Then, I remember that this is college football. Sometimes it’s hard to predict exactly how teams will play week to week and that’s why this sport is so fun to watch.
This week in particular, the games I picked were filled with underperformance and almosts. However, there is no other way to say it. My picks were terrible this week. I will be better. I just have to be.
The night is always darkest before the dawn.
Let’s get into my shit show of a Saturday.
Pitt vs Florida State
- The Pick: Florida State -10.5
- Result: Pitt 34 – 31 Florida State
I am so done with with this Florida State team!
There is just no reason you shouldn’t beat this Pitt team by double digits at home. Instead, Florida State constantly shot themselves in the foot and just let Pitt walk up and down the field. That defense can’t stop a nosebleed!
The offense didn’t look bad but they couldn’t hold onto the football. Which led to a lot of short fields for Pitt and was ultimately the Seminoles downfall. Castellanos just can’t do everything. For that reason, you will never see Florida State on my card again for the rest of the season.
Alabama vs Missouri
- The Pick: Alabama -3.5
- Result: Alabama 27 – 24 Missouri
This one really should have been a winner. Unfortunately, that’s just not how gambling works.
I was correct in my thinking that Missouri just wasn’t quite as good as this Alabama team. Mizzou was never able to get much going on the ground which led to them having to trust Pribula to win it with his arm. Let me be the first to tell you, he just isn’t good enough to do that. The Alabama defense took away the Tigers best offensive threat in Ahmad Hardy and that was enough to slow them down.
Offensively for Alabama, this was another game that Ty Simpson showed just how good he is. He made some jaw dropping throws in this one. Outside of him though, no one really impressed me. Jam Miller is a good pure runner of the football but he is bad at just about every other part of the game. Ryan Williams didn’t even have a catch in this one and Isiah Horton was quiet outside of a few key plays.
This is a game that Alabama was in control almost the entire time. Just not enough to get me the cover.
Indiana vs Oregon
- The Pick: Oregon -7.5
- Result: Indiana 30 – 20 Oregon
I am dumb. That really sums up this pick but let me tell you just how dumb I am.
There wasn’t a single second in this game that Oregon even threatened to cover. The worst part? I don’t think it’s because Oregon is a bad team. I just think Indiana is that damn good.
The Hoosiers dominated this game up front defensively. They lit up Dante Moore the whole game and made it really difficult for Oregon to pick up some key first downs. That effort was led by Aiden Fisher, who just seemed to be all over field in this game.
On top of all that, it is very clear that Fernando Mendoza is for real. He still has a little bit of the guy we saw at Cal in him, as he threw a pretty bad pick six. That being said, that guy can make every throw on the field and he showed that off in this one. Indiana needed to see that from him in a game where they were not very efficient on the ground and needed Mendoza to make plays.
There you go! I said all the nice things about Indiana. I don’t ever want to that again.
Nebraska vs Maryland
- The Pick: Nebraska -6.5
- Result: Nebraska 34 – 31 Maryland
This is another one that really feels like it should have been a winner.
Nebraska really dominated this game. They out gained Maryland by nearly 100 yards. It just didn’t feel like that. That was because of three interceptions thrown by Dylan Raiola. Three ugly interceptions I might add. Even if Raiola would have cut out just one of those interceptions, Nebraska likely covers this game. They were dominant on the ground. Emmett Johnson ran for 176 yards with an 8.4 yards per carry. When you see stats like that, the score of the game doesn’t typically look like this.
The story of this game was Dylan Raiola trying his hardest to keep Maryland in this game only to set himself up to make an incredible game winning drive. I can’t stand this guy!
South Carolina vs LSU
- The Pick: South Carolina +8.5
- Result: South Carolina 10 – 20 LSU
This was another bad beat.
South Carolina was within the number for most of this game. However, LSU was able to put up a field goal in the closing minutes of this game to kill the cover. The Gamecocks did have a chance to put a drive together to cover, but didn’t end up even getting a single first down.
This game was really ugly. Mainly due to that LSU defense being really good. They are good enough to carry the offense to wins. However, unless the offense starts clicking, I just don’t see this LSU team doing anything special this year.
I would also be remiss if I didn’t let you all know that LaNorris Sellers just isn’t that good right now. Forget what you saw last year. That guy just doesn’t have it this year.
Purdue vs Minnesota
- The Pick: Purdue +7.5
- Result: Purdue 20 – 27 Minnesota
A win! I finally get to talk about a win!
From the jump, it was clear that Purdue was the right side in this one. They scored first off a 4th & 1 QB power up the middle that ended up going 40 yards to the house. They would hold on to that lead until late in the 4th quarter where they completely collapsed. Not only did they miss a field goal but they also drove the length of the field only to not be able to punch it in and turned it over on downs.
What I am trying to convey is that Purdue was always going to cover this game but they really should have won it. That was really best case scenario for me though. It’s always fun watching one of your rivals implode on themselves AND make money off it at the same time!
